The southwestern corner of Oregon following the Illinois River and its deep valley is bucolic and somewhat remote from the busy world. Many travelers see only Highway 199 which leads them from Grants Pass to the Pacific coast at Crescent City and then north to Brookings and the spectacular Oregon coast. For the more curious, Cave Junction, the gateway to the Oregon Caves, and the surrounding towns are a treasure house of many arts and splendid scenery. Dorothea lived near Cave Junction for five years and painted many of its peaceful corners. Here are a few:
